Riau: More About Muara Takus temple



A. Brief Information

Muara Takus Temple is categorized to Buddha temple because of its similar characteristics, especially in construction, to Acoka Temple located in India. Many archaeologists assume that the temple is a remnant of Buddhist civilization, which came from India, in the Malay Archipelago. In contrast to the notion above, the temple is likewise an inheritance of the Sriwijaya Kingdom. Four temples – Tua Temple, Bungsu Temple, Mahligai Stupa, and Palangka – are located in the complex of the temple. The temple is the only temple that can be found in Riau Province.

B. Distinctive Features

The temple is built up of the mixture of sandstones, river stones, and bricks. The bricks are made in a village located around the complex of the temple namely Pongkai Village. Now, an old hole that was made of the bricks is assumed as a sacred place amongst the local inhabitants. You can find a heap that is used as a place for the inhabitants to burn the deceased body. Some unnamed buildings made of bricks stand firmly outside the temple complex as well.

C. Location

Muara Takus Temple lies in Muara Takus Village, XII Koto Kampar Sub-District, Kampar District, Riau Province.

D. Access

The location of the temple is about 135 km away from Pekanbaru City. And the distance between the complex of Muara Takus Temple and Muara Takus Village is about 2,5 km away. The location is nearby the Kampar Kanan River. To reach the destination, you can take any public transportation that will spend about 2,5 hours from Pekanbaru City.
